Book-I – The Hunt For The Vanishing Magic Of The Lost North
What would you do if you were alone in a dark, autumn forest and you heard snakes hissing? Behind you would be shining eyes. The size of saucers. It would be dead silent, but whatever is staring at you, it will not attack. It will only lurk from the safety of the darkness. As you approach with a step, the eyes will disappear like a shadow into the darkness of the night. Unless they fall in love with you, then you had better arm yourself. And immediately. They will start stalking you and if you do not react, they will attack you through your window one night, angry and violent. A village still lives in fear after a bedroom filled with blood. The bedroom where the woman the Eyes fell in love with lived.
This is just one of the creepy creatures in the Northern World. Once such a beautiful place: green meadow-like hills, grassy hills where flowers bloom in the spring. Small streams, rivers between high ravines, waterfalls and large mountains with peaks above the clouds. Endless spruce forests on the mountain peaks in the west and heather groves in the east. The song of birds, the melody of grasshoppers and the croaking of frogs. All this was once the Northern World…
But now, now it is only a shadow even more. After the greedy Kings’ power games, the forests have almost been cut down to the ground. The meadows are covered with cemeteries. The royal cities have decayed.
Yet, there is still one place that lives in the peace of nature. Nuwars… A beautiful land in the west, where the giant Icy Lake is like a lake in the middle of the surrounding snow-capped mountains. Untouched nature, the noise of the rapids and the masses of people from other countries have not yet taken over the local barbecue spots. A perfect place to have a campfire or fish.
And here fate leads one of the heroes of the story, Larze. A world traveler, who is a charismatic speaker who never fights but manages to talk himself out of a painful situation. The somewhat cowardly traveler arrives at his home, Nuwars, and is on his way to the local legendary inn, Mark’s Inn.
But as he walks the long road just beyond the borders, a strange feeling begins to grow within him that he is not alone. That he is being watched. That he is being stalked. That he is like a fly in a spider’s web…
He hides behind a waterfall and smokes a pipe to calm down in a cave filled with glowing mushrooms. Then he heads to an inn, where a surprise awaits him:
Two old friends, the mysterious hunter Nbrezor, who is scarred both in body and mind. About twenty years ago, he fell under a curse, and in his psychosis, he did things that cannot be undone. Despite his frightening appearance and strong physique, he is a kind and loyal friend. With Nbrezor at the inn is the wizard Okar. An old, long-bearded hooded man who loves beer and pranking others. Especially Larzen. And when Larze enters, Okar’s smile rises, because he knows that soon he will be able to scare the timid Larze again with his ghost stories.
When three friends, by fate, end up drinking beer together on a frosty evening, they come up with the idea of going to an old familiar place for one last time, around a campfire, out of nostalgia. One more trip together before the world goes to hell. One more trip before the magic disappears completely.
But the journey turns out to be much more epic than any of them can imagine. In addition to just a barbecue and sausages, there is actually an unknown, powerful and dangerous entity after them. A thriller-like fantasy adventure that gets the reader hooked from the very beginning with its easy readability and mysterious atmosphere, as the threat grows.
The dialogue-oriented storytelling ensures that the group dynamics of the trio, Larze, Okar and Nbrezor, work very well.
The dark, humorous and horror-filled fantasy adventure guarantees a quality reading experience for all Old-School Fantasy or Thriller fans. Also, the multi-level world history and how all the small pieces matter and can, at worst, cause a catastrophe, give the reader an aha moment and a rewarding, enjoyable journey towards the Lost North.
